Show the working
  1. Courses: (4 m) ÷ 0.25 m, rounded up = 16; + 1 at the eaves = 17 per slope
  2. Batten: 17 × 2 slopes × 6 m = 204 m
  3. Lengths: 34 runs of 6 m packed into 4.8 m lengths = 46 lengths (34 joins)

How it works

  1. Courses per slope = (rafter length − gap at the ridge) ÷ gauge, rounded up
  2. Battens per slope = courses + extra eaves battens
  3. Batten (m) = battens per slope × slopes × roof width
  4. Lengths to buy: each batten run cut from your stock lengths, packed longest first (first-fit decreasing)
  5. Rafters per slope = roof width ÷ rafter spacing, rounded up, + 1; nails = rafters × battens × slopes × nails per crossing
  6. Counter-batten (m) = rafters × rafter length × slopes

Batten size, grade and fixings depend on the rafter spacing and the tile or slate: follow the maker's specification and BS 5534.
