Shed base estimator

What this works out

The steps

  1. Dig and muck away: the soil you dig out, bulked up, in skips
  2. Sub-base (MOT Type 1): compacted layer under the base
  3. Concrete slab (bagged): if you're casting a slab and buying bagged concrete
  4. Concrete slab (mix your own): the same slab mixed from ballast and cement
  5. Paving slab base: if you're laying slabs instead of concrete

The bagged-concrete and mix-your-own lines are alternatives for the same slab: buy one or the other.

Questions for your builder

  • Does the shed need planning permission or building control where I live (size, height, distance to the boundary)?
  • How deep should the dig and the sub-base be for this ground and this shed?
  • Does the slab need mesh or a damp-proof membrane?
  • Is the ground soft, made-up or near a tree or drain, so the base needs an engineer?
